Achieving Work-Life Balance

Overview
If you want to be seen as an employer of choice, you need to look at helping your staff to achieve a better work-life balance. A recent DTI poll of 4,000 job seekers found that 33% would prefer flexible working hours rather than an extra £1,000 in their salary. 70% of job seekers said they wanted to work more flexibly, while 46% chose flexible working as the benefit they would most look for in their next job.

The organisational benefits which have been shown to flow from improved work-life balance practices include: lower absenteeism, reduced overheads, a more motivated and engaged workforce, and an improved customer experience.

There are of course barriers to achieving these benefits, including: resistance from senior management, presenteeism, and lack of appropriate technology.

This session will help give delegates a greater understanding of the benefits to be gained from work-life balance practices and how to put such arrangements in place.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this session, delegates will have the knowledge to enable them to:
· understand the benefits to be gained from work-life balance strategies;
· understand the family leave provisions including: maternity leave, adoption leave, paternity leave, parental leave, and time off for dependants;
· understand the statutory flexible working provisions which apply to those who care for children under the age of 6, disabled children under the age of 18 and, from next year, the carers of adults.
· consider enhancements to the family leave and flexible working provisions to improve work-life balance within their own organisations;
· develop homeworking and teleworking strategies; and
· make the whole package work in their organisation.

Who is it for?
The course is suitable for all those with responsibility for:
· implementing a work-life balance strategy;
· operating flexible working procedures, e.g. HR professionals, line mangers, and senior managers;
· reviewing and updating work-life balance policies and practices;
· training individuals to operate flexible working procedures.
The course is designed to appeal to organisations of all sizes, whether in the private or public sectors.

Approach and Duration
The course will cover both legal issues and practical tips and will be delivered by Louise Adamson, a professional support lawyer with Maclay Murray & Spens LLP.

Comprising two interactive sessions of approximately 45 minutes, and two break-out sessions, the course will run from 9.30am – 12.30pm. The first break-out session will help to highlight key work-life balance issues, while the second will involve consideration of at least one case study designed to put the knowledge gained during the morning to practical use, reinforcing learning.

Who will deliver the course?
The course will be delivered by Louise Adamson, the professional support lawyer in the employment team with Maclay Murray & Spens LLP. She is tasked with keeping both clients and the team up-to-date on developments in the law. Louise writes regularly for both specialist and generalist publications and is the editor of Lawline, a free fortnightly e-mail update bulletin for clients and contacts of the firm. She also co-edits the W.Green publications "Employment Tribunal Practice in Scotland" and the “Employment Law Bulletin”.
